Especially with products requiring a high effort for approvals (eg FDA approval for medical assemblies or approvals required by railway operators) the situation for long term availability often is very unpleasant.
The phenomenon of a limited availability of components is called obsolescence. The dealing of the problem is called obsolescence management.
